Universal Studios Singapore is a theme park located within Resorts World Sentosa on Sentosa Island, Singapore. It was a key component of Genting's bid for the right to build Singapore's second integrated resort. On 8 December 2006, the Singapore government announced that the consortium had won the bid. Construction of the theme park and the rest of the resort started on 19 April 2007. It is the second Universal Studios theme park to open in Asia (Japan being the first), and the first in Southeast Asia. The official plans for the park were unveiled to the public when Universal Studios Singapore released a park map to the public on 20 October 2009. Universal Studios Singapore has since attracted more than 2 million visitors in the 9 months from its opening.
Universal Parks & Resorts markets the park as a "one-of-its-kind theme park in Asia" and promises that the park will be the only one of its kind in Southeast Asia for the next 30 years.
The park consists of seven themed areas: Main Street, U.S.A., Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point, and Toy Story Land. The theme park's cast members speak in Cantonese, English, and Mandarin. Guide maps are printed in traditional and simplified Chinese as well as English, French, and Japanese.
The park has a daily capacity of 34,000 visitors — the least of all Disneyland parks. Hong Kong Disneyland currently occupies 22.4 hectares (55 acres); it will be expanded to 27.5 hectares (68 acres) when three new themed areas are completed. After the expansion, the park is expected to handle 7.92 million to 8.92 million visitors annually. The park capacity will increase to handle up to 10 million visitors annually over a 15-year expansion period.
With the introduction of new attraction zones and animal exhibits in recent years, visitor numbers have achieved numerous breakthroughs. In 2011 the annual attendance reached a record-breaking 6.95 million. By June 2012, the Park achieved attendance of 7.1 million guests, a 20% increase over the previous year, marking the eighth new attendance record in nine years. By the end of December 2012, Ocean Park achieved a record-breaking calendar year annual attendance of nearly 7.5 million guests, among half of whom were from Mainland China.
Ocean Park is divided into two main attraction areas: the Waterfront and the Summit, which can be further divided into eight different attraction zones: Amazing Asian Animals, Aqua City, Whiskers Harbour, Marine World, Polar Adventure, Adventure Land, Thrill Mountain and the Rainforest.
